The concert

Fecero un deserto e lo chiamarono Pace was performed in its final version on December 6, 2025, in the main hall of the “Nino Rota” Auditorium at the “Niccolò Piccinni” Conservatory in Bari, during the second event of “A Tempo — Festival of New Languages, 2nd edition”.

Me explaining — or at least trying to explain — the theme of my work

My work

Fecero un deserto e lo chiamarono Pace takes its title from a quote attributed to Tacitus and offers a critical reflection on the distorted concept of a “peace operation.” The primary reference is Israel’s occupation of the Gaza Strip and its genocide of the Palestinian people.

The musical material reworks elements of the Palestinian tradition — maqāmāt, microtones, irregular rhythms, and asymmetrical patterns — transforming them into a contemporary compositional language.

The percussion section includes partially prepared instruments and others from the Middle Eastern tradition, while the electronic elements process the instrumental sounds in real time, thereby bridging the musical cultures of the East and the West.

Vocal fragments taken from speeches by Francesca Albanese, Enrico Berlinguer, Refaat Radwan, and Vasco Brondi — unified by an anonymous synthetic voice — evoke the memory and resilience of a people that have remained unchanged over the years. The memory, struggle, and voice of the oppressed thus find expression through a language that blends Western and Eastern musical practices.

Who has played with me

I performed the piece alongside Emanuela Storelli on cello, Luigi Cascarano on clarinet, Davide Lepre on percussion, and Silvio Lotito as sound engineer.
