The time I learned how to use faders

The concert

On June 9, I joined other composition students from Puglia at a charity event organized by the association “Uniti per l’Ucraina”.

I am being introduced by “my sister”, Rosa Angela Alberga

The work

For the occasion, I had my piece It’s a Long Long Way to Therapy performed for string quartet and live electronics: a work that seeks to explore the post-traumatic effects that war can have on those who fight it in the trenches and on other battlefields.

Ilenia Piccolo, cellist

Each member of the string quartet had two piezo pickups attached to the bridge of their instrument and held in place by a clip. The sound of the strings was captured by the piezo pickups and processed by the electronics. The role of the electronics in this case was to enhance the acoustic instruments in terms of both timbre and resonance.

The first time I performed as myself

For the first time, I became a performer of my own music. This first approach into live electronics would not have been possible without the help of my friends Francesco Vitucci, Silvio Lotito, and Giuseppe Silvi (with whom I built the clips with balanced piezo pickups).

Acknowledgments

I’d also like to thank the quartet who agreed to help me test my experiments and study them: Nicoletta Leone, Silvia Zeverino, Nicolò Salzo, and Ilenia Piccolo.
